If you’ve ever wandered the Bahamas or Caribbean islands, you’ve probably met a potcake—the beloved island dogs with floppy ears, big personalities, and even bigger hearts.
The name comes from a traditional dish of peas and rice. Islanders scraped the last bits—the “pot cake”—from the pot and fed it to the dogs waiting outside. Over time, these scrappy companions adapted to island life with a blend of intelligence, independence, and resilience that feels different from any other breed. They’re survivors, explorers, and companions rolled into one.

We were lucky enough to welcome one of these incredible dogs into our family. Her name is Poppi, and she came to us through the caring hands of the Abaco Shelter.
Poppi isn’t just a pet—she’s a wise soul with lessons that echo the spirit of the islands themselves.
Finding Joy in the Simple Things
Poppi doesn’t need a basket of store-bought toys. A stick, a sock, or a coconut husk rolling across the yard is all it takes for her tail to wag in delight. Watching her reminds us that happiness often hides in plain sight.
✨ The Coconut Life lesson: You don’t need more to enjoy life—you just need to notice the beauty in what’s already around you.
Wisdom Woven From Caution and Curiosity
Poppi notices everything—a shoe moved, a stranger’s footsteps, a shift in the air. Her sharp memory makes her cautious, yet her curious nose keeps her exploring. That balance—curiosity tempered with wisdom—makes her feel like an old soul wrapped in fur.
✨ The Coconut Life lesson: Approach the world with open eyes, but let wisdom guide your steps.

Live with Independence and Confidence
To potcakes, the whole island is their backyard. Poppi has proven this a few times, slipping out for a 45-minute tour of the neighborhood and returning panting, smiling, and entirely unbothered. For her, it was just island instincts saying hello.
These dogs know how to feed themselves from what the island provides, which plants are safe, which scents signal danger, and how to roam with quiet confidence.
✨ The Coconut Life lesson: True freedom is trusting yourself enough to wander and still find your way home.
Resilience in the Face of Storms
Six years ago this week, Hurricane Dorian tore through Abaco, Bahamas with unimaginable force. Nearly 90% of Marsh Harbour was destroyed. For many potcakes, the Abaco Shelter was more than a building—it was a lifeline. And when the storm blew through, countless dogs and people were left without a safe haven.
Today, much has been rebuilt, fueled by the deep-rooted strength and unity that island life inspires. Like the people of the Abacos, the potcakes endured. With tails still wagging, they carried on. And now, the Abaco Shelter is not just rebuilding—it’s expanding, with fundraising efforts underway to continue their vital work.
✨ The Coconut Life lesson: Storms will come, but resilience is what carries us forward—whether you’re an islander, a traveler, or a potcake.

Love Deeply, Even if Guardedly
Poppi’s love feels different—more intentional, more serious. Her affection isn’t instant; it’s trust earned. When she leans in for a cuddle, it’s as though she’s offering a piece of her history, saying, “I choose you.” That makes her love all the more precious.
✨ The Coconut Life lesson: The most meaningful bonds take time, but once they’re built, they’re unshakable.
Every potcake carries stories of survival, adaptation, and quiet wisdom. They are living symbols of the islands: resilient, resourceful, and endlessly unique. Poppi reminds us daily of where she came from—the island, the shelter, and the people who made sure she could survive.
So the next time you see a potcake trotting along a sandy road, remember: they carry the spirit of the islands in their paws. And in their wisdom, we find lessons for living a life that is simple, free, resilient, and deeply connected—the coconut life itself.
